Norman Lindsay EthingsNorman Lindsay is without doubt one of Australia’s most controversial artists having challenged many aspects of society’s accepted painting, etching, drawing, sculpting and writing principals.

He was born in Creswick, Victoria on February 22 1879, the son of surgeon Robert Charles William Alexander Lindsay and Jane Elizabeth Lindsay and one of ten children. He was a prolific artist and utilised many different media to deliver his story. Norman died on 21 November 1969.

His full bodied nudes proved to be hugely controversial and in 1939 several were publically burned by ultra conservatives in the United States during a train fire. There is a large amount of his work held at his former home at Faulconbridge, New South Wales, which is now the NormanLindsayGallery.

Today Norman Lindsay etchings, drawings, paintings, books and sculptures are keenly sought after and major pieces rarely come on to the open market, and when they do prices fetched are often very high. In 1974 Bloomfield Galleries released the very collectable Facsimile etchings. These are still being released and are aimed at letting everyone enjoy his work at an affordable price. The facsimile etchings have become very collectable in their own right with a number of editions commanding prices reaching into the thousands.Norman Lindsay
